It’s My Space

A good example of personal space is at meal times: positioning glasses, pushing out cutlery and displaying a more overt body language. 

Diners demark their space. When they feel their territory has been invaded they will adjust and move items, reclaiming areas and re-establishing the boundaries around them. 

The same happens in meeting rooms, people position notebooks, phones, diaries, coffee cups, and all the objects serve as a fence to demark territory and their space.

 
 

Personal Space

In the 1960’s Edward Hall defined our spatial needs with proxemics, as we all need air space around us that we claim as our personal space. We move ourselves to keep the zones defined, which is why we dislike being forced into each other's intimate zone. We protect our personal zone which is why we dislike lifts, we stop talking, even to people we know, we avoid eye contact and often look up and down, we restrain our body movement and put on a neutral mask to hide our emotions.
